Oils & Powders

Herbal Cough Syrup

¼ C. elderberries (dried)

¼ C. stinging Nettles (dried)

¼ C. crushed rosehips

¼ C. wild cherry bark

1/8 C. echinacea root

1 Tbsp ginger

Blend the herbs into a pot of about 6 Cups of water. Turn on low heat and simmer for about 10 minutes. I don’t boil because I don’t want to kill the properties of my herbs. Let the water reduce down to about 4 Cups. Strain and save the water. Let it cool slightly. Now you are going to simply add a sweetener to thicken and create the syrup. Some recipes will say to use a lot of sugar, but we want this to be healthy, so we’ll use honey instead. Add ½ C honey to your herbal water and mix well. The syrup is technically done at this point, but if you want to preserve it to last longer, you can add brandy to it. Brandy is also good at fighting coughs and is warming and soothing. Add anywhere from 3 Tbsp to ¼ cup. Remember, you’re taking the herbal syrup in small doses, so you don’t have to worry about feeling like you’re drinking alcohol. You only want to take about 2 Tbsp of syrup as needed throughout the day. If you prefer not to use alcohol, you can add lemon juice instead. Store your syrup in a clean clear glass jar in the refrigerator. It should last about 2 weeks or longer, depending on how much brandy you added.

Hawthorn Calming Potion

Hawthorn is a tree in the rose family native to Ireland that often grows as a hedge. In spring and summer, it blooms with beautiful white flowers, and fruits in the fall with edible berries. In Celtic folklore, hawthorn and elder are considered to be sacred to the fae folk, and they must be regarded with fear and respect. It is said horrible things (like death or disease) can happen to those who disturb hawthorns, known in folklore as “the faery bush.” Amongst many other medicinal uses, the berries of the Hawthorn tree contain a mild sedative that relaxes the body and mind and regulates blood pressure, making hawthorn very effective at relieving insomnia, anxiety, and nervousness. It also has anti-spasmodic qualities, so it’s great for muscle spasms and menstrual cramps. Hawthorn is generally safe to consume, and has very few interactions with other substances. Please be sure to research any potential interactions with current drugs you are taking before ingesting hawthorn. (More Info)During times of stress, anxiety, muscle cramps, or sleeplessness, drink the following potion to allow your mind and body to rest:

What you’ll need:

  • 1/3 cup Dried Hawthorn Berries

  • 4 cups Water

  • Small Pot for Boiling

  • Strawberries and Raspberries (enough for a smoothie—ratio is up to your personal taste)

  • Agave syrup (or other sweetener) to taste

  •

Directions:

  1. Add the water and the Hawthorn berries to the pot, and stir to get all the berries wet.

  2. Bring to a boil, and reduce to a simmer on low heat.

  3. Cover pot and simmer for 40 minutes.

  4. Turn off the heat, and pour the hot liquid (with berries) into a glass canning jar. Put on the lid. As the liquid cools, it will seal the jar.

  5. Let the jar cool to room temperature, and put it in the fridge until cold.

  6. When needed, pour the liquid into a blender with strawberries and raspberries (or whatever fruit you want), and blend into a smoothie. Add a sweetener if needed. (If you don’t have a blender, you could also just mix the liquid with your choice of juice.)

  7. Enjoy, relax and sleep well. :)

Note: The berries are a bit mealy, so I tend to only drink the liquid, but you can eat them. They kinda taste like a jammy mix of red grape and blueberry.
